Foreign nationals planning to visit Sikkim for trekking or a simple tour are required to obtain an Inner Line Permit. This permit is initially issued for 30 days and can be extended for another 30 days at the Foreigners Registration Office in Gangtok. The Inner Line Permit (ILP) is issued on arrival at the Tourism Desk at Bagdogra Airport, the Sikkim Nationalised Transport Office at Siliguri, and the interstate crossing at Melli, Jorethang, and Rangpo check posts. The ILP is also issued at the Sikkim House in New Delhi, Kolkata, and also at the Indian Embassies and consulates the World over. You must present your original passport and Indian visa along with photocopies of each, and six passport-sized photographs.

If your visit to Sikkim is specifically for trekking, an additional trekking permit is also necessary. The trekking permit can only be acquired through a registered agency based in Sikkim. Once you engage a local agency, they will handle the process of obtaining the trekking permit on your behalf. Trekking in Sikkim: Best Season

The best seasons for trekking in Sikkim are spring (mid-March to May) and autumn (mid-September to November).

The autumn season offer the best weather conditions in Sikkim for trekking with clear skies, perfect temperatures for trekking, and stunning views of the Kanchenjunga Range and of the valleys around.

The spring season (March to May) is a popular trekking season in Sikkim, marked by blooming rhododendrons and other flowers that decorate the forests and the entire Kanchenjunga Range. The temperature is mild and comfortable, making it ideal for trekking, such as the Dzongri and Goechala treks, to name a few. The skies are mostly clear, providing excellent views of Kanchenjunga.

The autumn season from mid-September to November offers the best weather conditions in Sikkim for trekking, with clear skies, perfect temperatures for trekking, and stunning views of the Kanchenjunga Range and the valleys around. The stable weather, clear blue skies, and crisp mountain views add to the charm of trekking in Sikkim during autumn. While temperatures can drop to freezing at night, the daytime temperature hovering around 18 °C is pleasant and perfect for trekking. This season also reduces the risk of landslides or monsoon-related hazards while trekking in Sikkim.

The monsoon season (June to September, especially July to mid-September) brings heavy rainfall, slippery trails, leeches, and landslides, making trekking unsafe and uncomfortable. Most trekking routes are avoided or officially closed during this period.

Winter (December to February) can be cold with snow at higher elevations, making trekking in Sikkim challenging but still possible for experienced trekkers who are prepared for cold conditions and high-altitude snow. Some low-altitude treks are feasible during the winter in Sikkim.

In summary, for the best experience, plan trekking trips to Sikkim during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November), avoiding the monsoon months when heavy rains and associated hazards are prevalent. Winter treks are an option with proper preparation and precautions.

We went on the Singalila Dzongri Goechala Trek with Farouttrek. Fabian is a wonderful guide who likes to share his passion for the mountains. He explained to us a lot about the Himalayas. We had a crew of 7 local people and 7 ponies who made our camping trek an unforgettable time. They worked hard to give us the most comfort, & there always was a smile on their faces. The 17 days of traveling and trekking in Sikkim with Fabian was a brilliant mixture of culture and trekking so we got a very good insight into the people of Sikkim. We will keep these memories forever in our minds!

My wife and me along with a family friend and his two daughters and a son did two back-to-back treks with Fabian in Oct-Nov 2023: the Singalila Ridge Goechala traverse in Sikkim and The Three Passes Trek in Nepal. Fabian organized a fantastic team & both the trips went very well. In Sikkim I would recommend this trekking trip if you want to get off the beaten path. The Everest three passes trek was just two of us plus Fabian and a porter. Fabian and Kamal looked after us well. Fabian speaks English very well, allowing us to have interesting, conversations throughout the seven weeks we were together! We would highly recommend Fabian and Faroutrek for both these trips in the Himalayas.

My wife and I had an incredible experience with Fabian and his team of guides. Fabian was engaging, knowledgeable, and truly a pleasure to hike with. He was flexible and attentive, ensuring our trek was customized to exactly what we wanted. After our Goechala trek, we visited Darjeeling. He seamlessly organized everything. Thank you so much, Fabian! I will absolutely recommend you to others, and you will be my first call for our next Himalayan adventure!
