Starting and Ending Points of the Trek

The starting point of the Helambu Trek is Sundarijal, located in the north-east corner of Kathmandu Valley. This traditional trek takes you through a variety of small villages, including Chisopani, Hyolmo, Kutumsang, Magin Goth, Tharepati, Malemchigaun, Nakote Hyolmo and Tarke Gyang.

After experiencing the beauty and culture of these villages along the way, the Helambu Village Trek concludes with a gentle descent to Melamchi river and then to Melamchi Village. From there, you can take a drive back to Kathmandu.

Best Time to do this trek

March to May and October to November are the best times to trek through the Helambu Villages. But after having said that, it can also be done even during the winter months, as the trek route are accessible through out the year.

Helambu Trek Itinerary

Day 1: Drive Kathmandu to Sundarijal (1460 m/15 km). The Helambu Trek starts. Trek to Chisapani (2195 m/5 hours). Overnight Lodge.

Greet the day with an adventure and set off for an exciting trek to the entrance of Shivapuri and Langtang National Park, just beyond the city of Kathmandu (15 km). Embark on a fascinating Helambu trek through the forest and farm fields until you reach the high ridge of Chisapani at an altitude of 2,195 meters.

Here, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Annapurna-Manaslu-Ganesh Himal, the Langtang Himal, and the Jugal Himal range, as well as a captivating glimpse of the Kathmandu Valley.

At Chisapani, you will have a front-row seat to the beauty of a sunrise and sunset, framed by the majestic mountain range. Chisapani is especially beautiful during sunrise and sunset, when the mountains are illuminated by the golden light of the sun.

Day 2: Trek Chisapani to Kutumsang (2141 m/6 hours). Overnight Lodge.

The morning sun paints a picturesque landscape as it rises over an array of peaks. As the sun rises high in the sky, it’s time to set off on an adventure to Kutumsang. But what lies ahead is an even more beautiful journey.

From the morning’s vantage point, you can see a downhill walk towards Pati-Bhanjyang village. As you ascend towards Thodung Danda Hill and then onwards to Gulphu-Bhanjyang, you’ll find yourself in the quaint village of Kutumsang, where you can take an overnight stop. From here, your adventure will take you into the stunning Helambu territory.

Day 3: Trek Kutumsang to Melamchi Gaon (2560 m/5 hours). Overnight Lodge.

From here, you will be surrounded by lush forests of rhododendron, pine, and oak trees. The morning climb takes you to Yurin Danda Ridge, a cool, lovely spot at 3510 meters high. Take a short descent into the forest to reach an open area, then climb to Tadepatti for lunch. Enjoy the majestic views of the Langtang and Jugal mountains.

After a refreshing stop, venture up to the ridgetop for a spectacular view of the peaks in the Jugal Himal range, including Ganesh and Manaslu. Descend to Melamche-Gaon, a heavily wooded area of tall rhododendron and pine trees, to the base of a hill with a nice grassy field. Then, walk past the farm fields to Malamche-Gaon village for an overnight stay, surrounded by the Hyalmo people and some Sherpa and Tamang tribes.

Day 4: Trek Melamchi Gaon to Tarke Gyang (2570 m/4 hours). Overnight Lodge.

Have you ever wanted to explore the beautiful landscapes of the Himalayas? Then a morning walk from Malamche to Tarke Gyang, the one major village in Helambu, might be the perfect adventure for you.

Along the way, cross the Melamchi River over a suspension bridge, climb for an hour to Nakote village for lunch, and end the day in Tarke-Gyang for an overnight stop. Come with us on this incredible journey and discover the beauty of the Himalayas!

Day 5: A Day in Tarke Gyang.

Spend an unforgettable day exploring the ancient heritage of Tarke-Gyang, a small but vibrant village in the Himalayas. Witness the unique Buddhist culture and color, marvel at the intricate wood carvings, and savor the delicious green apples grown in the local orchards.

Experience the hospitality of the Hyalmo people and visit the ancient Ama Yangri monastery on top of the village. Get ready for an unforgettable journey of discovery and adventure!

Day 6: Trek Tarke Gyang to Sermathang (2693 m/4 hours). Overnight Lodge.

As the sun rises over the picturesque village of Tarke Ghyang, an idyllic morning walk awaits us. Our destination for the day will take us through a forested area and past many Chorten, or Buddhist prayer monuments.

We will then reach Gangyul, a small but charming village nestled in the rolling hills. From there, our pleasant, winding path will take us to Shermathang, where we will stay overnight.

Shermathang is a picturesque village of the local Hyalmo people of Helambu, giving us the opportunity to visit an old and fascinating monastery. Today’s journey will be an enjoyable one, filled with beautiful scenery and fascinating cultural experiences.

Day 7: Trek Sermathang to Melamchi. Drive to Kathmandu.  End of Helambu Village Trek.

The road from the beautiful village of Sermathang winds its way downward to the warm and inviting Melamche Bazaar and the nearby town.

The trek continues, passing through many villages and up to Dhulikhel town, before eventually making its way to the outskirts of Bhaktapur city and finally back to Kathmandu.
