North Sikkim with it’s headquarter at Mangan, is the biggest of the four District that Sikkim has, and is also the seventh least populated District in India. The district has a population density of 10 inhabitants per square kilometre, and the population are mainly of Lepcha and Bhutia descent, while Tibetan community also constitute a small part of the local populace. Buddhism is the main religion followed by majority of the people in North Sikkim district, but Hinduism is also practised by a considerable population.

North Sikkim also shares Kanchenjunga National Park with West Sikkim and the Shingba Rhododendron Wildlife Park is also located here in the Yumthang valley.

With most of it’s land falling in the mountains, North Sikkim is mountainous, from dense temperate forest to Alpine vegetation and thinning out to the shrubs and bushes like in the Tundra at Gurudongmar Lake. Being close to the border with Tibetan mainland, controlled by the Peoples Republuic of China is heavily patrolled by the Indian Defence Personnel.
