Permits and regulations required for Trekking, and Expeditions in Sikkim

Trekking, expeditions, and hiking tours to restricted areas in the National Parks in Sikkim require permits, and adhering to certain regulations to ensure the safety of trekkers and the preservation of the environment.

Foreign nationals must obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) or Protected Area Permit (PAP) for trekking, expeditions and hiking tours in certain regions of Sikkim. Additionally, trekkers must register with the local authorities and follow designated trekking routes to minimize the impact on the fragile ecosystem

Foreign visitors will require an inner-line permit over and above the Indian visa to travel and trek in Sikkim. The Inner Line permit will be issued for a period of thirty days and cannot be renewed. The Inner Line Permit is readily available upon arrival in India. The Inner Line Permit will be issued at the Sikkim House in Delhi, Kolkata, Siliguri, and the inter-state police checkpoints at Rangpo and Melli. Foreign nationals will have to fill out a form and submit it along with a copy of their passport, an Indian visa, and three passport photos attached to them.

Indian nationals do not need permits for all treks in West Sikkim. However, special permits for trekking and Hiking tours in North Sikkim will be needed. Indian Nationals on tour to restricted areas e.g., Tchangu Lake, Nathula Pass will also require special restricted area permit.
