Best season for Trekking Tour & Expedition in Sikkim

Sikkim is open for hiking tours, trekking, and expeditions year-round. But choosing the right time of year to embark on your chosen trekking expedition route is crucial for a successful and enjoyable trek or a hiking tour.

The best time to plan your hiking tour, trekking, and expeditions in Sikkim is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons, when the weather is pleasant and the views are clear.

Avoid trekking in Sikkim during the monsoon season (June to August), as the trails can be slippery and visibility may be poor.
Additionally, winter treks in Sikkim (December to February) are possible but require proper gear and preparation for the cold temperatures. It’s important to research and plan accordingly to ensure a safe and memorable trekking expedition in Sikkim.

Language Spoken in Sikkim

In Sikkim, Nepali is the most widely spoken language and serves as the common dialect understood by nearly everyone. Alongside Nepali, English, and Hindi are also widely comprehended, making communication easy even for those with minimal education. While Sikkimese is spoken but is restricted to the select few, it is less common. Therefore, there’s no need to worry if you don’t know Nepali. From tea shop vendors to support teams on trekking trails, everyone will understand English and be able to assist you.

Nonetheless, learning a few words of Nepali does help too. To make your experience even smoother, remember these key phrases: Namaste (Hello), Dhanyabad (Thank You), Mithoo Cha (Very Tasty), Ramro (very nice), Abo Jaam ( now let’s go), Chitoo (Hurry), Pani (water), Thakyoo (I am tired), Mo Ramro Chu (I am fine). These simple words can go a long way in connecting with the locals and showing your appreciation.

Internet Connectivity in Gangtok, Pelling, and Beyond

With the advent of modernization, free Wi-Fi is widely available, but primarily in hotels located in Gangtok and Pelling. In contrast, accommodations in smaller towns like Yuksom generally do not offer complimentary Wi-Fi services. However, in Yuksom, small restaurants do offer free WIFI in exchange for their services.

If you have a SIM card from your home country with activated international roaming, you can access the internet through the four main service providers: Jio, Airtel, BSNL, and Vodafone.

Foreign hikers should also take into account that Satellite Phones are banned in India, and if found using hikers will have to face serious legal action.

However, mobile network coverage is non-existent on the trekking trails away from towns. Additionally, while there is no electricity on these hiking trails, it is available even in the remote villages.

Is Sikkim Safe for Trekking Expedition and Tours?

It is totally safe to tour and trek in Sikkim. Sikkim is one of the few states in India where it is very safe for travelers of all kinds. Whether you are on a tour and trekking in Sikkim or are here for an expedition, Sikkim is very safe.
