Sandakphu Phalut Trek is a 90Km long trekking trail which starts from Manebhanjyang and winds through the Singalila National Park to Sandakphu and Phalut and finally ending the Trek in Rimbik. Sandakphu (3636 m) and Phalut (3600 m) are the two highest points on the Singalila Ridge.

It is said that trekking originated in India in Darjeeling as far as eighty years ago & Darjeeling has one of the most spectacular treks to offer, the Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek.

Darjeeling Singalila Ridge trek is a tea house trek. Accommodation will be provided in Trekkers huts in Tongloo, Sandakphu and Phalut. While lodging in private lodges run by local families will be offered in Ramam, Kalpokhari and Timburey. Local food will be provided in Tea houses and Lodges of stay along the trekking trail.

Best time to embark on the Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek is from March to May when the Rhododendron trees are in full bloom coupled with the views of the mountain range this is the best time to trek in the Singalila Ridge.

September to December is also recomended for Darjeeling Singalila Ridge trek, this is because of the recently concluded three months of  monsoon rain the skies are clear of dust and smog resulting in the crystal clear views of the mountain range for the entire day.

How  hard is Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek ?

Moderate to easy trekking from 1981m at manebhanjyang to 3636m at Sandakphu, trekkers carry their day pack only with their personal items in them & walk at their own pace. Main baggage will be carried by porters/ponies.

Singalila Ridge Trek is a tea house trek and local Nepali and Tibetan families run and operate the lodges of stay. There are no particular tribes that inhabit the Singalila Ridge and can be surmised as a mixed culture.

Dal, Bhat and Vegetable curry, the staple diet of the local people are served, though other food items are also available on demand. These lodges and Trekkers Huts can fit about twenty people at a time. On interreacting with the local people from the lodges and with the porters will definitely give you an insight into the culture of the local people residing in these areas.

Is Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek safe for Trekkers ?

Trekking is an adventure and certain amount of Risk is involved in every adventure. But the Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek in Darjeeling is safe to trek as it is a moderate to easy trek and the highest point that you will be trekking to is only 3636m at Sandakphu. On an average you will also be trekking about 10Km in a day.

Day 1: Arrive at Bagdogra Airport/NJP Rail Station/Nepal Border.Drive to Darjeeling (90Km/3Hrs). On your arrival our representative will meet and drive you to Darjeeling. Overnight Hotel(B/B only).

Day 2:   Acclimatization Day. Overnight Hotel/Homestay (B/B only).

A walking tour of Darjeeling. Visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute housed inside the Padmaji Naidu Zooligical Park. The Tibetan Refugee Centre, a centre sanctioned by the Government of India around 1960 to house the Tibetan people in exile. Evening free to explore Darjeeling Town. Take a stroll at the Mall or visit Glenarry’s a bakery shop for a sip of Darjeeling Tea. Overnight Homestay or Hotel.

Day 3:  Drive to Maneybhanjyang(1981m/1Hr). Trek Starts. Trek to Tongloo/Tumling(3001m/13Km/6Hrs).

After an early breakfast drive to Indo-Nepal border town of MANNEYBHANJAN, 2134m/7,000ft-20km away. After all the entry formalities are over start the Trek to Tongloo or Tumling. You will be starting your 1500m climb to your first day’s destination TUMLING 9500ft, 12.5km away, going along the TONGLU Ridge. Overnight Lodge /Trekkers Hut(All meals included).

The 7Hrs trek is as follows:

  • Manebhanjyang(1981m) to Chitray(2800m)-2Km /2Hrs of Steep uphill Trek.You get to witness beautiful panaromic views of Darjeeling and Siliguri from Chitray.
  • Chitray to Meghma(2900m)- easy undulating 6Km/3Hrs Trek.
  • Meghma to Tonglu Top(3070m)-3Km/2Hrs  uphill trek.

Day 4:  Trek Tongloo to Kalpokhari(3100m/15Km/5Hrs). Overnight  Lodge.

During its first two hours or so, after an easy down hill trek you come to JAUBARI 2750m 4km away, followed by another easy downhill trek of 5km to a little resting place in GARIBAS 2620m/ before you start the fairly steep 6 km trek of 4 hrs or so to Kali Pokhri, 2950m/9679 feet. After the first thirty minutes of brisk walk, through thick deciduous forests, you find a tea shop at Kayakata, on the Nepal Side of the Road. The route continues uphill to KALAPOKHRI, where they have a black water lake (Pokhri), which does not freeze even in winter. Overnight Lodge ( All meals included).

  • Tumling(2975m) to Jaubari(2750m)-Easy 4Km downhill Trek of 1Hr. 30minutes.
  • Jaubari(2750m)  to Gairibas(2620m)-Easy 5Km downhill trek of 2Hrs.
  • Gairibas to Kalpokhari(3001m)-First 45minutes fairly steep Trek than 4Km trek on level ground till Kalpokhari.

Day 5:   Trek Kalpokhari to Sandakphu(3636m/6Km/3Hrs). Overnight Trekkers Hut.

You will not like to miss out on the panoramic view of the snow peaks from Sandakphu, which is best seen early in the morning. An early start from here will give you a chance to view the snow peaks twice, once as soon as you reach Sandakphu and again next morning before you start your return or onward trek. Overnight Trekkers Hut/Lodge (All meals included).

Day 6:  Trek Sandakphu to Phalut(3480m/22Km-7Hrs). Overnight Trekkers Hut.

We will wake you up at 4:30 am to catch the early morning 180 Degree view of Everest and Kanchenjunga Range from the view Point at Sandakphu-return back to the Lodge for Breakfast. After breakfast we start the trek. Sandakphu to Phalut (3600 m): This is the most pristine stretch of the trek, offering great views of Kanchenjunga and Mt. Everest. It is a one-day trek via Sabarkum (3536 m) covering 21 km in 7hours. The Trek from Sandakphu to Phalut is the best part of the Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek.

Day 7:  Trek Phalut to Ramam (23Km/6-7Hrs). Overnight Home Stay.

Early morning trek to Phalut Top for sunrise views of the mountain range. After breakfast start theTrek to Ramam through undulating down hill mountain path through thick bamboo groves, Oak and walnut forest till Gorkhay a small agricultural village, our lunch spot for the day. After lunch the eight kilometre trek winds through the small village of Samamdin and through thick forest through a fairly uphill path till Ramam-2490 m / 8,500ft. Overnight Lodge ( All meals included).

  • Phalut – Gorkhay : Easy 15Km downhill trek through dense bamboo and silver fur forest.
  • Gorkhay to Samamdin: Slight uphill 1Km.
  • Samamdin to Ramam(2490m): First 1Km downhill to the river bed and then fairly uphill 6.5Km through dense mixed forest fo the Singalila National Park.

Day 8:  Trek  Ramam to Timburey(2300m/10Km-3Hrs). Overnight Home Stay.

The Trek to Timburey is an easy trek of about ten kilometres through small villages. You will be passing through terraced vegetable fields upto Timburey our destination for the night. Overnight Home stay( All meals included).

Day 9:  Trek to Rimbik(2331m/18Km). Drive to Darjeeling Hotel/Home Stay(B/B only).

The three hours Trek to Rimbik  passes through dense forest known as the black forest due to its dense vegetation. The Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek ends in Rimbik with a three hours drive to Darjeeling via Dhottrey & Maneybhanjyang. Timburey to Rimbik(2331m)–10Kmeasy trek through black forest till Rimbik. Overnight Hotel / Home Stay(B/B only).

Day10:   Drive to Bagdogra Airport/NJP Rail Station/Nepal border for Final Departure.  End of Darjeeling Singalila Ridge Trek.

Extension can be made to Bhutan, Sikkim or Nepal. An extra Day of Mountain Biking in Darjeeling inside the Sinchel wildlife Park can also be organized on demand.
