Chitwan Jungle Safari home to the endangered Gyps Vulture

Chitwan jungle safari is an amazing destination for wild life seekers. The  Chitwan National Park with it’s headquarters in Kasara, is blessed with enormous natural beauty & provides the best wild life experience to visitors. The Park was granted the World Heritage tag in the year 1984. Chitwan National Park covers an area of 932 Sq. Km & is also the first National Park of Nepal. It can be easily said that Chitwan National Park is Nepal’s most popular tourist destinations. There are two entrances to the National Park, Sauraha in the east and Meghauli Village in the west.

Highlights of the Chitwan Jungle Safari

Chitwan National Park once the hunting grounds of the ruling class of Nepal is home to a Variety of mammals. Royal Bengal Tiger, Rhinocerosses, Leopards sloth bears, Fishing Cats, Civets, Hyenas and several other animal species roam the forest of the Chitwan National Park. Close-by the Gharial and Turtle Conservation Breeding Centres have been established.

In 2008, a Vulture breeding centre was inaugurated aiming at holding up to 25 pairs of each of the two Gyps vultures species now critically endangered in Nepal – the Oriental white-backed vulture and the slender-billed vulture. The Elephant Breeding centre is one of the main highlights of the Chitwan Jungle Safari.

Every year Bird watchers and conservationists throng the forest of the Chitwan National Park. As per the 2006 census there are 543 species of birds in the Chitwan National Park. The alluvial grasslands provide a safe haven for the critically endangered Bengal Florican, Grey Crowned Prinia and several variety of Grass Warblers. Other species of Birds that abound the Chitwan National Park are the Paradise Flycatchers, Bengal Pittas and some varieties of Sunbirds.

Chitwan Jungle Jeep Safari :

There are two options to Chitwan Jungle Jeep Safari. First, the Half Day Jeep Safari which lasts about four hours and the second option is the Full Day Jeep Safari. The full day Chitwan wildlife Jeep Safari starts in the morning and lasts till late afternoon. The full day Jeep Safari takes visitors deep into the Chitwan National Park forest and this in return increases the chances of spotting lots of wildlife.

Elephant Safari : The Elephant Safari in the Chitwan Wildlife Park provides the best way to spot wildlife like the Rhinocheros and is also quite safe as these animals refrain from attacking bigger animals.

Jungle Walk : Accompanied by a Guide Jungle Walk in the Chitwan Jungle Safari is also the best option for Birdwatching as one can venture out on specific trails to spot varities of Birds and other species.

Canoing : Accompanied by a Guide and a boatman, canoing on the Rapti River inside the Chitwan National Park is also an option to spot wildlife as these animals and Birds venture to the river to quench their thirst.

What is the Climatic condition in the Chitwan National Park ?

Since Chitwan National Park is located in the central Climatic zone of the Himalayas, Tropical monsoon climatic condition with high humidity is experienced all the year round. Monsoon season starts from June and goes on till September, when the rainfall is at its highest. After October the monsoon rain eases off and the humidity drops. Daily temperature gradually drops from 36°C  to 18°C. Nights time temperature remains at 5°C until late December than temperature start rising gradually. Intermittent rainfall can be experienced during these months which brings the temperature down.

What is the Vegetation encountered during the Chitwan Jungle Safari ?

Himalayan Sub- Tropical broadleaf forest dominated mainly by Sal trees interspersed with Chir Pine covers seventy percent of the Chitwan National Park. Some parts on the Northern Slopes does have smaller flowering trees and shrubs such as the Rosewood, Kapok and Rhino Apple Trees, the fruit of which is savoured by the Rhinos. Twenty Percent of the Parks area is covered by grassland with more than fifty species of grasses including the tallest Grass in the world , the Elephant Grass is found here.

Best Time to Embark on the Chitwan Jungle Safari

Best Time to go on the Chitwan Jungle Safari is from October to March when the Temperature is low and the climatic condition is at its best. Moreover, villagers cut the tall grasses for their use and in turn this increases the visibility . During summers when the smaller water bodies dry up and the animals converge on the larger water bodies to drink water this in turn makes it easier to spot wildlife. However, this may not be a good time for Birdwatching in Chitwan Natiobnal Park as most of the migratory Birds would have migrated elsewhere. During the monsoon season the grasses grow tall, upto eight metres tall and this makes it harder to spot smaller animals. Moreover, the monsoon rains make the Chitwan Jungle Safari harder and is therefore restricted inside a buffer zone. Therefore, it is best to avoid going on a Chitwan Jungle safari the during the monsoon months.
